Magers & Quinn Virtual Launch Party

Watch the Launch!

Magers and Quinn will host a virtual launch for Carol’s new book, This Distance We Call Love, on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, at 6 p.m. The event is free and will be streamed live to the Magers & Quinn Facebook page and YouTube channel. Carol will do a short reading from her book, followed by a discussion with Luke Hankins, editor and founder of Orison Books. Books will be available through Magers and Quinn Bookstore.

As the pandemic seemingly comes to a close, all of us are struggling to navigate new boundaries between ourselves and the world. Carol Dines is a writer for our times. Exploring love, loss, commitment and freedom, Dines’ powerful stories focus on our most intimate relationships—couples, families, friendships—as her characters explore the universal need for human connection in a world that often pulls them apart.

“While none of the stories were inspired by the pandemic, they all explore aspects of relationships that are under scrutiny right now,” said Dines. “I wanted to write about that tension between the demands of relationships and the demand in ourselves to grow and become who we need to be.”  The timing couldn’t be better for the publication of her latest book. This Distance We Call Love will be released by Orison Books in August 2021, just as we are coming out of the COVID bubble and people are re-engaging with the world.

Early reviews for the collection have earned high praise. “The novelistic short stories in This Distance We Call Love ring devastatingly true in their portrayals of characters who are learning to reckon with persisting losses, fears, griefs, and needs. I have only rarely encountered short fiction that has this kind of visceral immediacy, so surprising at all turns,” said Kevin McIlvoy, author of One Kind FavorAt the Gate of All Wonder57 Octaves Below Middle C, and other works of fiction.
